U.S. falls to Czechia in 2025 Davis Cup Second Round Qualifier: 'No one gave up'
DELRAY BEACH, Fla. — The United States and Czechia entered the second day of their 2025 Davis Cup Second Round Qualifier knotted at 1-1. The two teams are among the best of the world, and no one would blink an eye if this tie was taking place at the Davis Cup Final 8 in Bologna, Italy in November. However, the two teams were at the Delray Beach Tennis Center, each hoping to punch their ticket to Italy.
While the players representing the stars and stripes—world No. 5 Taylor Fritz, No. 29 Frances Tiafoe, No. 63 Reilly Opelka, and former doubles No. 1s Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram—did their best, it wasn't enough to defeat the Czech team brimming with top talent, led by No. 16 Jiri Lehecka, who notched two of Czechia's points to help them win the tie, 3-2.
Krajicek and Ram, who claimed the 2024 Olympic silver medal in men's doubles, came out swinging against mixed doubles gold medalist Tomas Machac and late-substitution No. 17 Jakub Mensik. The match was tight from the start, with no breaks until the Czechs earned a mini-break to go up 3-2 in the tiebreak. The experienced Americans—Ram is twice Mensik's age—found their groove, and the crowd erupted in cheers when Krajicek and Ram won the first set.
A two-hour weather delay paused the match in the middle of the second set, and Czechia returned to the court with a vengeance, nabbing that set to force a third. Ultimately, after two hours and 40 minutes, the U.S. emerged victorious, defeating their less-experienced doubles counterparts 7-6(6), 5-7, 6-4, and helping their country jump out to a 2-1 lead in the tie.
"That's about as good as it gets. It's really fun to play a home tie, my first one," Krajicek said. "The atmosphere was absolutely amazing tonight. I don't think I've come off the court more fired up than that in a really long time."
However, the singles rubbers didn't go quite as the U.S. team had hoped, with an ailing Fritz falling to 2025 US Open quarterfinalist Lehecka in a tough three-setter, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. Fritz hung in there for every point, fighting off countless break points, but the Czech was able to step up in the big moments and force a deciding fifth rubber.
"I'm just playing for the team, like one thing I'll always do is what I do best—just compete. When I'm out there playing for our country and I've got all the guys on the bench cheering for me, I'm always going to go out and compete as hard as I can," Fritz said in his post-match press conference. The way I was competing and trying to will myself through it is a big reason why I was able to win the second and give myself chances. I was just trying to struggle my way into a win."
Tiafoe took the court for the deciding rubber shortly before 11 p.m., but lost the first set in 26 minutes. He got some of his signature "Big Foe" mojo back in the second, breaking then holding to take an early 2-1 lead, which he held on to for a few games. But the big-hitting Mensik ultimately got the best of him, clinching the tie with a 6-1, 6-4 victory just after midnight.
Captain Bob Bryan had hoped to extend the U.S. Davis Cup and Billie Jean King teams' record to 6-0 in Delray Beach en route to the Final 8, but the newly-inducted member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame was incredibly proud of the grit and tenacity his players showed, as well as their spirit and support for one another.
Bryan lauded Ben Shelton and Tommy Paul—both were originally nominated but had to pull out due to injuries—for showing up to the tie in order to cheer on their friends, as well as Reilly Opelka, who didn't take the court but was a constant presence on the bench and at practice.
"He's been practicing here since Saturday. Every day he was out there doing everything we needed of him, cheering on the sidelines, bringing the energy in the locker room," Bryan said. "Everything that Reilly brought, you don't see it, because he wasn't in the win-and-loss column, but he adds a lot to this team."
Bryan also made sure to give kudos to his players for their efforts on the court, regardless of the results.
"[There were] a lot of inspiring performances out of this team. Taylor Fritz, who wasn't able to practice all week and was in bed with a sickness, came out and played two great matches. Dug deep. Had a huge win for us on day one, and [I'm] really proud of the way he competed. You know, not feeling his best, but he played some spectacular tennis and just ran up against a little bit tougher opponent today.
"And our doubles guys, Rajeev [Ram] and Austin [Krajicek], delivered one of the most epic matches I have been on the bench for. High-level tennis for three hours. Ups and downs, momentum shifts. They came up with the goods. They raised their level and had the crowd on their feet, which is all you can ask for. So I was very honored to be out there with them during that moment."
To Bryan, who has played 31 Davis Cup ties, watching Opelka, Tiafoe and Shelton celebrate Fritz' Friday night win encapsulates the importance of the team event, and what makes it so unique.
"They have played on Junior Davis Cup teams, traveled to ITF Grand Slams, played against each other on the tour, and here they are walking shoulder to shoulder [as] the U.S. Davis Cup team," Bryan said. "That was just a special moment just to see those guys smiling, laughing together, and those guys are friends for life. I'm happy to just see their chemistry and what they will do for each other.
"We love Davis Cup weeks, our staff loves them, we had a lot of fun. We're not crying over this loss—we just tip our hat to a better team over the last two days," Bryan said. "We went out there, and everyone sweated their butt off. No one gave up. That's all you can ask for as a coach."
