U.S. and Czechia tied 1-1 after first day of 2025 Davis Cup Second Round Qualifier
DELRAY BEACH, Fla. — The first day of play of the Davis Cup second-round qualifying tie between the United States and Czechia proved just how closely matched the two teams are—but only one will reach the Final 8 in Bologna, Italy, in November.
Four Top 30 players took the court at the Delray Beach Tennis Center on Friday night, with world No. 29 Frances Tiafoe squaring off against No. 16 Jiri Lehecka, followed by No. 5 Taylor Fritz taking on No. 17 Jakub Mensik in a packed stadium.
Lehecka, a 2025 US Open quarterfinalist, nabbed the first point of the tie for Czechia by defeating Tiafoe 6-3, 6-2. The first set followed serve for the first several games, until the Czech earned a break to lead 5-3, and he rode that momentum through the rest of the rubber.
Tiafoe did a great job coming up the net, winning some tough points by being aggressive, but his best game eluded him as his opponent read the ball well and covered the court with ease.
"I thought I had some looks early. Once he broke me, I thought he did a great job of front-running," Tiafoe said. "You have to tip your hat when a guy is playing that well. Just give him credit."
While today didn't go his way, and both captains could make changes to the lineup, Tiafoe is excited for the potential challenge of playing the deciding rubber—although he would be happier if the U.S. clinched their spot in the Final 8 after the fourth rubber.
"It would be awesome to play a fifth rubber. But it would be awesome to not play, as well, and hopefully we win," he said in his post-match press conference. "Hopefully the guys get it done before I have to go out there again. I'd rather there be a dead rubber, but if I've got to go and play a fifth rubber, I'll be ready to go, and hopefully put up something better than I did today."
Fritz, the top American, took the court next, and got his team one step closer to the Final 8 by fighting off Mensik, 6-4, 6-3 to put the stars and stripes on the board. With the straight-sets win, he also improved his Davis Cup record to 8-3 in his 11th tie.
The 2024 US Open finalist was feeling under the weather earlier this week, but stepped up and played great tennis under the lights, supported by a full crowd of U.S. fans and a stacked bench. Ben Shelton, who was nominated but is not on the final roster due to injury, also came out to cheer on his compatriots.
Although he didn't feel 100%, Fritz remained consistent throughout the match, although he said after the match that he needed a few games to adjust to the conditions and determine which shots and strategy would be most effective. He ran for just about every ball, sprinting up to the net to get even the shortest drop shots and fighting for every groundstroke off both wings.
"We just all [had] huge smiles on our faces. I was blown away by the effort Taylor put in tonight. Sometimes when you're not feeling
your best, you kind of just focus on the present and take
one point at a time," Bryan said. "We were all surprised and impressed by the effort."
While Team USA owns a 5-0 record in team competitions in Delray Beach, this is a tough tie between two top teams, so captain Bob Bryan isn't sweating the scoreline too much, especially with 2024 Olympic silver medalists Rajeev Ram and Austin Krajicek slated to suit up for the doubles rubber when action resumes on Saturday.
"We'll definitely take a 1-1 after the first day. I thought the crowd was awesome. They brought a lot of energy," Bryan said. "Really impressed with how Taylor fought today. He's been a little under the weather. He was laser-focused, and his game really was there tonight for us.
"We're happy being 1-1 going into the doubles. The guys have been having a good week of practice and looking forward to seeing that matchup tomorrow."
Play begins at 2 p.m. ET on Saturday with the doubles rubber, followed by the reverse singles matches. The schedule could be amended if either team clinches victory in the fourth match, and captains may make substitutions to Saturday’s lineups up to one hour prior to match time for the doubles and up to 15 minutes after the previous match for the singles.
