Roland Garros 2025: 22 Americans advance to second round, most since 1994
The American singles contingent at Roland Garros made 21st-century history as 22 players advanced to the second round in Paris.
That tally, made up of 14 women and eight men, marks the most total U.S. players to reach the singles second round at Roland Garros in 31 years, since 24 in 1994 (14 men, 10 women).
The 14 American women advancing this fortnight is the most since 14 also reached the second round in 1987. Twenty American women made the second round at the French in 1986.
Five of the 14 to notch first-round wins were seeded players: No. 2 Coco Gauff, No. 3 Jessica Pegula, No. 7 Madison Keys, No. 16 Amanda Anisimova and No. 31 Sofia Kenin. Also through are Danielle Collins, Bernarda Pera, wild card Iva Jovic, Caroline Dolehide, Ashlyn Krueger, Alycia Parks, Ann Li, Hailey Baptiste and Robin Montgomery.

The eight U.S. men into the second round is the most since 2020. The last time more than eight American men reached that stage at the French Open was in 1996, when nine did so.

No. 12 seed Tommy Paul, No. 13 Ben Shelton, No. 15 Frances Tiafoe and No. 23 Sebastian Korda are joined by qualifier Ethan Quinn, Reilly Opelka, wild card Emilio Nava and Jenson Brooksby in the second round.

Two all-American matchups are set for the second round: Korda vs. Brooksby on the men's side, and Pegula vs. Li in the women's draw. Shelton is already through to the third round after receiving a walkover against Frenchman Hugo Gaston, who withdrew with abdominal pain.
